Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy: On the Ethical Dimension of Recommender Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract Feasting on a plethora of social media platforms, news aggregators, and online marketplaces, recommender systems (RSs) are spreading pervasively throughout our daily activities. Over the years, host ethical issues have been associated with diffusion RSs tracking monitoring users’ data. Here, we focus impact may personal autonomy as most elusive among often-cited sources grievance public outcry. On grounds philosophically nuanced notion autonomy, illustrate three specific reasons why limit or compromise it: threat manipulation deception RSs; RSs’ power to reshape identity; knowledge critical thinking. In view, however, notwithstanding these legitimate concerns, effectively help users navigate an otherwise overwhelming landscape. Our perspective, therefore, is not be intended bulwark protect status quo but invitation carefully weigh aspects in design ethically oriented RSs.

متن کاملStandardizing Ethical Design Considerations for Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems
AI is here now, available to and extending the powers of anyone with access to digital technology and the Internet. But its consequences for our social order are not only not understood, but barely even yet the subject of study. How can we guide the way technology is changing society? Since 2015, the IEEE has been developing principles for ethical design for intelligent and autonomous systems.
متن کاملStandardizing Ethical Design for Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems
For decades—even prior to its inception—AI has aroused both fear and excitement as humanity has contemplated creating machines like ourselves. Unfortunately, the misconception that “intelligent” artifacts should necessarily be human-like has largely blinded society to the fact that we have been achieving AI for some time. Although AI that surpasses human ability grabs headlines (think of Watson...
متن کاملStages of Ethical Development in Artificial General Intelligence Systems
A novel theory of the stages of ethical development in intelligent systems is proposed, incorporating prior related theories by Kohlberg and Gilligan, as well as Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. This theory is then applied to the ethical development of integrative AGI systems that contain components carrying out simulation and uncertain inference – the key hypothesis being that effecti...
